What Movie to Watch on Hotstar!?

If you have subscribed to Disney Plus Hotstar and are a horror fan, look no further. Just go and search for The First Omen (2024). Click play and have a great time watching one of the best prequels ever made.

The film is a prequel to The Omen (1976), one of the finest horror classics. Debutant director Arkasha Stevenson delivered a fine one. She co-wrote the screenplay with Tim Smith and Keith Thomas from a story by Ben Jacoby based on the characters by David Seltzer.

The First Omen is about an American novitiate sent to work at a catholic orphanage in Rome, where she uncovers a sinister conspiracy and tries to stop it before it’s too late. You might think it is a regular run-of-the-mill plot for a horror film, and why do I need to watch it? You are right. You might even guess the climatic reveal earlier.

Yet, what makes The First Omen a must-watch is how it plays out and the tonality of it. It has the vibes of a well-made 80s horror classic and an incredible cast led by Nell Tiger Free, who delivers splendid performances.

Plus, if you are a horror fan, it will be a crime if you are postponing watching this instant classic!

What Movies to Watch on Amazon Prime!?

If you have subscribed to Amazon Prime Video, here is the list of movies you should add to your watchlist. Without any further ado, start watching them.

Aavesham (2024)

This Jithu Madhavan-written and directed movie is one of the smashing hits to come out of the Malayalam movie industry this year. It follows the story of three teens who come to Bengaluru and face a hard time there because of their seniors in college. In search of a solution to their problem, they try to befriend a local gangster there. Did they put an end to their senior’s menace? If so, what happened to their relationship with the local gangster after that? These questions get answered in the most entertaining way possible with humour and heart.

The movie broke out on the scene because of the cracker jacker performance from Fahadh Faasil as the local gangster. The way he played the comedic yet terrifying sort of character was incredible. Though Fahadh ran away with the movie with his stellar performance, Mithun Jai Shankar, Hipzster, Roshan Shahnavaz, and Sajin Gopu delivered solid performances that made the movie work on a larger scale. Especially Sajin Gopu’s performance as Amban, the trusted aide and friend of Fahadh’s Ranga.

If you have watched Tamil language movies, you will note that the movie has a lot of similarities with Jigarthanda (2014) and Maari (2015). They are available to stream on Disney Plus Hotstar for FREE now!

Aavesham and Jigarthanda share plot similarities. In both, the protagonist (s) befriend a local gangster for their selfish reasons and get into trouble when the gangster finds out about it.

Regarding Aavesham and Maari, the characterizations of the gangsters have overlapping similarities. Though they seem like a comedic gangster on the outside, they have a dark past hidden within them. Also, they yearn for a meaningful relationship besides their loyal henchmen.

If you are searching for an entertaining movie with humour and heart, Aavesham should be on your must-watchlist.

Garudan(2024)

This Tamil language movie written and directed by Durai Senthilkumar is one of the few clear-cut hits for the Tamil movie industry in 2024. With Sasikumar and Unni Mukundan playing pivotal roles, this Soori starrer is a solid movie despite its shortcomings.

The movie is about how a loyal worker struggles with a moral dilemma when his bosses and childhood best friends turn against each other due to circumstances. Though the movie could have been better in storytelling and character sketches, it is still a solid entry for Tamil cinema.

Soori’s performance as Sokkan and Sasikumar as Adhi will make you look ahead of those shortcomings. Soori is no longer a protagonist material but a star material. Man’s transformation is unbelievable. But he deserves all the praise for his dedication and hard work.

Watch Garudan if you like a movie with a rural flavour.

J Baby (2024)

Yet another movie from Pa. Ranjith’s Neelam Productions in 2024 after Blue Star deserves more appreciation. This Urvashi-starer Tamil movie went under the radar despite being a well-made movie.

J Baby is about the journey of two brothers in search of their lost mother. A journey that makes them realize what their mother means to them and what it means for a family to stay together despite their differences.

As usual, Urvashi is the show-stealer here. But Dinesh and Maaran deliver solid performances on par with her. The scenes where Dinesh’s character asks forgiveness from his mother and the brothers reconcile after a long time are a testament to it.

Yeah, it may be melodramatic at times. But it is a solid watch worth spending your precious time on it.

What Movie to Watch on Lionsgate Play!?

If you have a subscription to Lionsgate Play directly or via Amazon Prime Video/Ott Play, check out The Beekeeper.

Directed by David Ayer, this Jason Statham starrer is a perfect popcorn flick if you feel like watching an action flick.

Though it shares similarities to the Denzel Washington starrer Equalizer movies, The Beekeeper is a unique movie and has its flavour.

It is about a retired special service agent who goes on a rampage after his caring lease owner gets scammed and takes her life.

The Beekeeper is a perfect movie to watch on a lazy weekend evening with a popcorn bucket by your side.
