Curated Mix’s What Sitcom to Watch Next Recommendations
The next challenge will be finding an answer to what sitcom to watch next. Many struggle with this and spend more time during this search. But don’t worry. Check out Curated Mix’s sitcom recommendations based on thematic resemblance.
Take up the recommendations if they fit in with your preferences.
Young Sheldon & Fresh Off the Boat!
The first couple of recommendations will be Young Sheldon (2017 to 2024) and Fresh Off the Boat (2015 to 2020). Now, if you are a visual story buff, you would ask a question. How are these two sitcoms thematically similar?
Let us explain.
You would have heard from your circles that Young Sheldon is a sitcom about a bona fide genius and his earlier years with his typical Texan family(!?). You may think the sitcom will focus on his struggles to adjust to the average world around him. It does focus on that. Yet, through those struggles, the sitcom brings to light the details of his family.
You may start watching Young Sheldon for Sheldon. But you will binge it for the family!
And he had such a lovely family. Now, let us see about them. Let us start with Sheldon’s father, George Cooper Sr., an average Texan father working as a football coach in the school where he and his siblings study. He has flaws but takes care of the family best in his way.
Then, Sheldon’s Mother, Mary Cooper. A typical Texan mother who is an orthodox Christian and yet tries to understand and be accommodating to Shedlon’s scientific reasonings. Like most sons, Sheldon loves her mother the most.
Next comes Georgie, George Cooper Jr., Sheldon’s elder brother and Missy Cooper, Sheldon’s unidentical twin sister. Georgie and Missy may seem like idiots while standing next to Sheldon. But they make up for it with their street smartness and social skills, which Sheldon lacks.
Last but not least. Meemaw, Sheldon’s maternal grandmother, lives across the street. Fiercely independent and caring. She understands Sheldon best next to Mary but stands whenever he crosses the line unintentionally or intentionally.
You would understand why Young Sheldon has thematic resonance with Fresh Off the Boat. Though Sheldon is the central character, it is also a sitcom about his family.
And Fresh Off the Boat is straight up a family sitcom. It is about a Taiwanese family who moved to the United States of America in the 1990s and their struggles with the cultural and economic reality of living there.
It is the story of the Huangs. Louis and Jessica. Their three sons, Eddie, Evan, and Emary, along with their grandma, Louis’s mother. Louis owns a steakhouse restaurant in Orlando. Jessica helps him in his business and takes care of the family. Among the kids, Eddie is a rebel who challenges his mother’s authority and breaks the rules often. Evan is a non-problematic middle child and is famous among the ladies due to his charisma. Emary is every mother’s dream child who excels in studies and obeys the rules. Meanwhile, Grandma Huang may seem like an average retiree, but she has a few secrets.
So, Young Sheldon and Fresh Off the Boat have a common underlying theme of family. You can add coming-of-age as a common theme, as both sitcoms show Sheldon and Eddie’s journey from school to college.
Young Sheldon is one of the most-watched sitcoms of all time. You can start with it and proceed to Fresh Off the Boat or vice versa.
Mr Iglesias & Abbott Elementary!
Now, let us move on to our next couple of sitcom recommendations, Mr. Iglesias (2019 to 2020) and Abbott Elementary (2019 to present).
These recommendations have a commonality with our previous recommendations. Mr Iglesias and Young Sheldon seem to be character-driven. And yet, they have a much broader theme. Fresh Off the Boat and Abbott Elementary are straight-on-point sitcoms. They are clearly defined when it comes to genre or theme.
Now, let us deep dive into our second couple of recommendations.
Mr Iglesias is about a high school history teacher who tries to help his students who are labelled misfits by other staff. Abbott Elementary is about teachers who go above and beyond to ensure their students have a good school life.
From these one lines, you can see both these sitcoms have more in common. They are about teacher(s) making sure their students have a better life ahead. Now, the commonalities don’t stop here.
In both the sitcoms, the leads are from the minorities in the US. Mr Iglesias is a Mexican-American, and the teachers from Abbott Elementary are mostly African Americans, except for Melissa and Jacob.
Now, let us see about the characters from both sitcoms in brief.
In Mr Igelsias, Gabe, a high school history teacher who helps his students, is the central character. Then Tony, a colleague, friend, and former classmate of Gabe in Woodrow Wilson High School. Marisol, Gabe’s favourite student. Mikey – a fellow student who has a crush on Marisol. Principal Paula, Abby, and Ray (Gabe and Tony’s former English teacher and now a colleague) are the other main characters.
Abbott Elementary is about the characters of Janine, Gregory, Melissa, Barbara, Ava, Jacob and their students.
There is another reason for coupling Mr Iglesias and Abbott Elementary, apart from the thematic reasons. It is the potential for a crossover between them. Principal Paula and Ray from Mr Iglesias can do cameos in Abbott Elementary, and it would be perfect!
Wishing and hoping Quinta Brunson (creator of Abbott Elementary) reads this and makes it a reality someday.
So, what is your opinion about our curated list of sitcom recommendations? Are you going to watch the first couple of recommendations first or the next couple first? Do binge them according to your wish, and share your opinions in the comments.
